Monterey County Free Libraries has been offering literacy services for well over 30 years. Confidential, student centered, one-on-one literacy tutoring is offered free to adults who have some basic knowledge of English. The goal is to meet the needs of the many adults in Monterey County with limited literacy skills, and to help them successfully reach their own goals. Goals of learners include, passing a variety of tests like the driver’s license test, GED, or the citizenship exam. Other life skill goals include getting a promotion at work, helping a child with homework, being able to read the labels on medicines, or simply being able to be more independent in life. The library is now also offering conversational English group classes in many locations.
The literacy tutors are all volunteers. New volunteers are always needed and may join the program at any point during the year by registering for the New Tutor Training by calling (831) 883-7597.
“English is my big problem. I’m going to the literacy program to improve and practice my English. Sometimes, I feel as if I’m learning to swim in the immense ocean. To gain entrance to the society of this country seems beyond my reach.”
