Nancy Harray
Secretary
Retired School Teacher
Years of enjoying special libraries inspired Nancy Harray’s tenure of about two decades on the Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries board. As a child she began with Nancy Drew in the small New Hampshire library where her grandmother was the librarian. More recently Nancy frequented the Monterey Peninsula College library, where she brought students for more than a decade. She supports the Monterey County Free Library and marvels at all they offer: “equal access to information that will open windows to a wider world,” as their mission statement declares.

Nancy Ausonio
Director and Foundation Founder
Business Owner
Nancy gives to make a difference, offering both her time and money. She is a founding board member of the Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries, and is President of the Friends of the Andy Ausonio Library where she takes an active role in fundraising, especially for projects benefiting local youth. She is a past board member of the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital (SVMH) Foundation, as well as the CFMC, where, as an active member of the grants committee, she enjoyed visiting and learning about local nonprofits. Her favorite causes include organizations benefiting seniors, youth, healthcare (the Nancy Ausonio Mammography Center at SVMH is named in her honor), the CFMC’s Women’s Fund and her local church. She has received many honors including the KSBW Jefferson Award, the “Luchessi in the World” award (from her parents’ hometown of Lucca, Italy) and the Junior Achievement Monterey Bay Business Hall of Fame. She was named Champion of the Arts by the Arts Council for Monterey County and Outstanding Woman of Monterey County. She and her late husband, Andy, gave back for many years. The library in Castroville is named in his honor, thanks to Nancy’s leadership efforts. She has passed her values down to her family. Her three children are involved in serving the community and supporting nonprofits in their own right.
If you’re blessed to have made it, it’s nice to be able to give something back.

Luis Acevedo-Arreguin
Director
Community College Math Professor
Luis Arreguín currently teaches mathematics at Monterey Peninsula College and Hartnell College. Since 2016, he has also served as an instructor with the North Monterey County Unified School District, where he prepares adult learners—primarily agricultural workers—to obtain their U.S. citizenship.
For over 20 years, Luis volunteered at the Andy Ausonio Library in Castroville, helping students from elementary school through college complete assignments and strengthen their understanding of science and mathematics.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he collaborated with faith-based organizations to assist low-income families from Castroville to King City in accessing rental assistance. Around that time, Luis joined the board of the Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries. Academically, he earned a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and later obtained a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from the University of California, Santa Cruz. His experience as a graduate student in the United States reshaped his understanding of why fewer Latinos and Latinas pursue degrees in science and mathematics compared to other groups. Through this experience, he came to recognize the vital role that families, mentorship, and after-school programs—particularly those offered through local libraries—play in shaping the educational paths and future opportunities of young people.
As a board member, Luis is committed to supporting initiatives that empower the Latino community and help prepare the next generation for success. He strongly advocates for protecting and strengthening the programs libraries provide for low-income families, whose children often view libraries as a second home. Luis is especially dedicated to ensuring that public policies continue to support, rather than hinder, the essential work libraries do in creating equitable opportunities for all.
